New York

Après la lecture de l’entretien de Robert Paxton (... expose les collabos à New York), je me suis rendu sur le site de la New York Public Library. En fait, il n’y a pas qu’une exposition, mais plus d’une dizaine en cours (!) et toutes fort intéressantes.

C’est surtout le genre de la programmation qui enthousiasme : la photographie contemporaine, l’art déco, les luttes homosexuelles à New York, l’American Ballet, Katharine Hepburn, les Ballets russes de Serge Diaghilev, etc. : ça déménage. On est loin des expositions policées de la vénérable Bibliothèque nationale.

Toujours à New York

Je transmets cette annonce de Richard Hell (celui de Blank Generation) concernant une exposition de livres surréalistes :

Sheelagh’s show at MoMA

My extraordinary wife, a librarian at the Museum of Modern Art, has conceived and curated an exhibition that is on view there now in the Education building. It fills six vitrines with marvelous, rare--mostly illustrated--books as well as many info-packed labels. There is also a big flat-screen digital wall display. The exhibition is called “How to Make a Modern Art Library: Selections from the Eluard-Dausse Collection.” Eluard is Paul Eluard, the major Surrealist poet, and Dausse is a physician who was a friend of (and physician to!) the Surrealists in the 1920s-‘30s and a collector of their books. The Surrealists’ books were consistently beautifully designed and illustrated, and Sheelagh uses a carefully chosen, sumptuous selection of them to describe how the acquisition of the two book/ephemera collections at once in the mid-‘30s helped form the way the new Museum of Modern Art evolved the style, values, and methods of its library.

If you can get to the Museum before June 22, the Education Building, where the show is located, is at the opposite end of the sculpture garden from the main building. The entrance is at 4 West 54th Street. Immediately inside the doors, to the right of them, there is a stairway down to the building’s mezzanine. That’s where the exhibition is. (You can also get into the Education Building from inside the Museum by using the door in the sculpture garden next to the outdoor cafe, or by using the connecting passageway on the second floor next to the museum cafe.)

Actually, I’ve never had a problem visiting the Education Building mezzanine from the building’s 4 West 54th Street entrance without having gotten a ticket to the main museum. So that way, if you’re in the area, and for whatever reason, prefer not to spend time in the Museum proper you can see Sheelagh’s show without paying any admission fee. The drawing show that’s up in the Museum building now, of 2,500 contemporary (mostly really recent) works on paper, is pretty stimulating though...

Richard Hell

J’ai vu, il y a plus de dix ans, à New York (au Guggenheim) une exposition des pièces surréalistes de deux grands collectionneurs : Ahmet Ertegun (d’Atlantic Records) et Daniel Filipacchi. Je me souviens très bien des livres, des éditions exceptionnelles, des reliures à tomber par terre. Il y a moins longtemps de cela, à Paris, à Artcurial, dans le VIIIe arrondissement, pareil : une exposition-vente de tirages très rares d’ouvrages surréalistes et toujours le même choc. Je ne peux donc qu’inviter tous les New Yorkais et les gens de passage dans la ville à s’y rendre.

Londres

Une exposition, forcément intéressante, sur le contructivisme russe à la Tate Modern à Londres.

Zines propose des copies de nombreux articles extraits de publications anciennes. Ces numérisations tournent autour du thème de l’érotisme, de la science-fiction et du fantastique.

C’est presque un site à la gloire de Jean-Pierre Bouyxou, tant ses publications et articles y sont présents (Fascination, Sex Stars System, Vampirella) ! Le site présente aussi des pages du fameux Midi Minuit fantastique.

Les photos anciennes, les couvertures des magazines et les affiches sont superbes.

Cracovie

Mon amie Belli est installée depuis plusieurs mois en Pologne, à Cracovie où elle suit des cours aux Beaux-arts. Elle anime un blog qui rend compte, avec la délicatesse qui est la sienne, des travaux d’artistes contemporains polonais et met en ligne les photos de son environnement.
